"अनादि मी" (anaadi me) means "I am timeless"!
This expression in Marathi symbolizes an eternal struggle. Grammatically it doesn't, but the great visionary Vir Savarkar has given this phrase a completely new dimension.
While serving his double life imprisonment as a political activist in the Andaman islands' Kala Pani - Cellular Jail at the hands of the British in early 1900s, a 20 something young Vinayak had to face many testing times and also fight depression owing to the inhuman tactics of the 'gentlemen' Britishers.
At one point of time when he started having suicidal thoughts, a brilliant & timeless poem came to him & lifted him up, taking him far away from all the defeatist thoughts he might be having. The poem addressed to the death personified says, "I am timeless, eternal & immortal - and there's no foe born yet who can finish me". "अनादि मी - अनंत मी - अवध्य मी भला ... मारील रिपु जगती असा कवण जन्मला".
Students of poetry must ponder over this beautiful poem which gives great insights on the philosophy of life and of course for the craft.
The world-guru Sant Tukaram Maharaj also says, "रात्रंदिन आम्हां युद्धाचा प्रसंग" ~ the struggle never ends may it be day or night (for the pious).
So, this constant struggle (of our soul for liberation) is central to the human life. Ordinary people like us are also facing struggle day & night - mostly for our material goals. But to realize 'what to struggle for'; this phrase by Savarkar shall always be the lighthouse for every human being on the face of this mother earth! ... "अनादि मी"!
